Numbers indicate vertical position in the column - so Column a goes from a1 to a6, column i goes from i1 to i8, and column f goes from f1 to f11.
For example: at the start the red pawns are on b7, c7, d7, e7, f7, g7, h7, i7, j7 and the green pawns are on b1, c2, d3,e4, f5, g4, h3, i2, j1
