4 Handed Chess: A fun variant For 4 players
4 Handed Chess is played exactly the same as normal Chess, except that the board has been enlarged and there are four players, one on each side of the board.
The game can either be played in two teams or 4 individuals. It would also be possible for 3 weaker players to challenge one strong player.
In the case of team play the players opposite each other form the partnership, and it is necessary to mate both of the opponents to win. If one of the partners is mated he is placed in suspended animation until the checkmate is released. In suspended animation the players pieces cannot be moved, do not give check and cannot be captured.
In all forms of play a Pawn is 'Queened' on an opponents back rank only. (Note: Pawns cannot move backwards)
Note that an individual can be mated by one or more people, but the one who plays the 'Mate' gets the points. In the individual game there is no suspended animation. So once mated they are out, although the pieces remain and just act as obstacles.
4 Handed Scoring: Mate 1; Loss 0; Stalemate/Draw ½ (i.e. per game - min. 0, max 3)
In the event of  a draw in 'Mate' scores then the player who has gained the most points from captures.
Simultaneous Chess
: A serious variant For 2 players (or ladder)
Standard game but two (or more) boards at once
Hexagonal Chess: A more serious variant For 2 players (or ladder)
And now for something completely different. Same rules but played on a Hexagonal board to complicate the issue.
9 Pawns and 3 Bishops are the only difference in pieces at the start of the game, however all pieces (except Pawns) have 3 directions of movement instead of the normal 2. (Queens and Kings have 6 directions instead of 4). See below for diagrams of movement.
